Eliminating odours from clothing
Much like at the dry cleaner, steam helps eliminate odours, surface impurities, and bacteria — quickly and without washing. Use a handheld steamer on the garment while it’s on a hanger. Alternatively, the steam burst from an iron can also help — just be sure to keep the soleplate at a safe distance from the fabric.
Prepare a light misting solution using warm water and white vinegar. Spray lightly over the garment — without soaking — and leave to air dry in a well-ventilated space. If needed, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda inside the pockets or affected areas, leave for a few hours, then shake or brush away the excess.
A natural deodoriser, tea tree essential oil is highly effective at eliminating unpleasant smells. For a refreshing fabric spray, combine:
- 100 ml of water
- 2 tablespoons (20 ml) of tea tree essential oil
- A small spray bottle
- Mist lightly and leave to air dry
To banish the musty scent from a pair of jeans forgotten in a drawer, try this discreet method: fold them neatly, seal in an airtight bag, and place in the freezer for an hour. Once removed, hang them briefly to allow the cool air to finish neutralising bacteria and any residual moisture.
